Why Invest in a Gold IRA?

A Gold IRA lets you hold IRS-approved physical gold and other precious metals inside a tax-advantaged retirement account.

Inflation Hedge

Gold has historically preserved purchasing power over decades of inflation.

Portfolio Diversification

Low correlation to stocks and bonds reduces overall portfolio volatility.

Safe-Haven Asset

Gold tends to hold value during market downturns and geopolitical uncertainty.

Tax-Advantaged Growth

A Gold IRA provides the same tax benefits as a traditional or Roth IRA.

The Complete Gold IRA Guide

Everything a first-time or experienced investor needs to know about protecting retirement savings with physical gold — without navigating away.

What Is a Gold IRA?

A Gold IRA (Individual Retirement Account) is a self-directed retirement account that allows you to hold physical gold, silver, platinum, and palladium as qualified investments — rather than the paper assets found in conventional IRAs.

Like a traditional or Roth IRA, a Gold IRA offers tax advantages: contributions to a traditional Gold IRA may be tax-deductible, and growth is tax-deferred until you take distributions. A Roth Gold IRA uses after-tax contributions, but qualified withdrawals are entirely tax-free.

The key difference is that a Gold IRA requires a specialized IRS-approved custodian who manages the account and arranges for the physical metals to be stored in an approved depository on your behalf. You never take personal possession of the metals while they remain in the IRA.

Why Gold? The Case for Precious Metals

Gold has served as a store of value for over 5,000 years. Unlike paper currencies, which can be printed in unlimited quantities, gold is a finite physical resource — and its scarcity is what gives it enduring purchasing power.

In 1971, the U.S. dollar was taken off the gold standard. Since then, the dollar has lost over 85% of its purchasing power — while gold has increased from $35/oz to over $3,000/oz. That's not a coincidence: as fiat currency supply expands, gold's relative value rises.

Gold also behaves differently from stocks and bonds. During the 2008 financial crisis, the S&P 500 fell 38% — gold rose 5%. During the COVID-19 crash of 2020, gold hit all-time highs. This negative correlation with equities makes it a powerful portfolio diversifier.

How a Gold IRA Works — Step by Step

1

Choose a Custodian

Select an IRS-approved self-directed IRA custodian that specializes in precious metals. They handle compliance and paperwork.

2

Fund Your Account

Transfer or rollover funds from an existing 401(k), IRA, or 403(b) — or make a new contribution up to the annual limit.

3

Select Your Metals

Choose IRS-approved gold, silver, platinum, or palladium coins and bars through a licensed precious metals dealer.

4

Secure Storage

Your metals are shipped to and stored in an IRS-approved depository. You receive regular statements confirming your holdings.

Key IRS Rules to Know

Purity requirements: Gold must be 99.5% pure; silver 99.9%; platinum & palladium 99.95%.
No collectibles: Rare or collectible coins (e.g., pre-1933 U.S. gold coins) are not permitted.
No home storage: Metals must be held in an IRS-approved depository — not at home or in a safe deposit box.
Contribution limits: $7,500/year in 2026 ($8,600 if age 50+), same as all IRAs combined.
RMDs apply: Traditional Gold IRAs require minimum distributions starting at age 73.
Early withdrawal: Withdrawals before age 59½ incur a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax.
