Back to Glossary
The stock market is a place where shares of publicly owned companies are bought and sold, allowing investors to own a piece of these businesses.
In Depth
The stock market is a collection of exchanges and other venues where stocks (shares of ownership in companies) are traded. When you buy a stock, you become a part-owner of that company. The value of your stock can go up or down based on the company's performance, industry trends, and overall economic conditions. It's a key way for companies to raise money and for individuals to invest and potentially grow their wealth.
Example
Many people invest in the stock market through their 401(k)s or by buying shares of well-known companies like Apple or Amazon.
